Think about a baby. When he is learning language, first he listens. Then he babbles, or practices the sounds he has heard in the language. Then, he begins to understand actual words. Finally, he begins to speak. In teaching ESOL, we notice a similar phenomenon in which receptive vocabulary precedes expressive. Even in our own mother tongue, we notice this effect. We recognize and understand in hearing and reading many more words than we use in writing and speaking. What is more, your productive vocabulary never grows past your receptive. In other words, you will never speak more words than you can listen to or write more words than you read. In short, in order to be able to use more words, you must receive and understand more words!

Came across this on Google Plus: several posts about learning anything in 20 hours. I then came across it with regards to learning a language. So here is what I got:

I am read Genesis 1:1-2:3 today. There were some verses that particularly resonated with me and my personal goals at this time.

Luke 15

Luke 15 is all about rejoicing when you find something that was lost. This chapter features The Parable of the Lost Sheep, The Parable of the Lost Coin, and The Parable of the Lost Son (the Prodigal Son). When we lose our way, God is looking for us until we are found and then He takes the occasion to rejoice.

Today I particularly liked Micah 4: 11-13.

One of my new favorite blogs is that of Mama Lisa. This blog is the most amazing collection of children's songs I have ever seen. This lady has collected songs from all over the world in so any languages. What is more, she has the translated into other languages. So she may have a French lullaby featured. Then the lyrics may be available in English and Spanish. What I really appreciate about this site is that there are even songs even less popular languages and dialects. An added bonus is that she has take the time to locate or provide audio or visuals for many sngs so that you can hear them performed.

I absolutely love the International Digital Children's Library! This is a collection of digital picture books for children in all different languages. 

I cannot express how valuable a resource this is for anyone with an Internet connection has so many books to read with their child no matter what language.

I intend to use this site to read to my son and to learn to read in foreign languages.

So one of my goals is to read the Bible more. Another is to learn foreign languages. Why not combine the two. I figure if there is one thing I should understand in a foreign language, it is the Word. Now, don't get me wrong. In no way am I fluent enough in anything but English to understand, but I think that once I have read in English a good review and reflect would be to reread in another language especially if the English is side by side with the foreign language. It may be difficult at first, but I will get it.

I like this website because it offers the opportunity to read the Bible in several languages side by side. So I will try it and see how it goes.

Not yet! But I will! It is my dream to be truly bilingual. I want to think in other languages and everything! I want to see the world, but with a small child, I have to be able to communicate effectively with people because I fully intend to drag him along!

I took Spanish for in excess of five years and worked in a school that was close to half Hispanic and Mi español es pequeño. But I know enough to begin working on another language. I chose French because I want to see Paris and Africa.
