Introducing One to One Correspondence

For numbers, we will be beginning with a sheet of paper with just squares drawn on it.  My son will practice putting his linking cubes one in each square.  This is a one to one correspondence activity.

We will begin this week by helping the child begin to understand the concept of one at a time.  This is important as it is the child's first encounter with equal values.  It is also the child's first encounter with equal repeating values, which are what we use in counting.

ONE TO ONE CORRESPONDENCE:
Simply have the child put one linking cube (or whatever manipulative you have) in each square.  Only have enough cubes available to fill each square.  If you have ten squares on the paper, have ten cubes available.  This helps the activity to be more self checking.  If the child has cubes left over, there is also a square on the paper left.  The purpose of this activity is to help the child learn to fill each space with a manipulative until all of the spaces are filled.

MONTESSORI CARDS AND COUNTERS INTRO:
Once he can do this, we will begin with a basic Montessori cards and counters activity (through five).

Here is a resource for the themed cards and counters.  I just made mine from construction paper and markers, but these are fun too!

Here are directions for presenting the Montessori Cards and Counters activity.

Because my son is so young, I have modified the activity to include a template for the placement of the manipulatives. More on that next week though when I introduce these cards to my son!

CONTINUE ROTE COUNTING:
All the while, we will continue practicing rote counting with the Counting Playlist on YouTube.
